Runway Improvement Projects to Occur This Summer at MHT

The Airport will remain open and operational throughout the entire project.

[MANCHESTER, NH] – MARCH 27, 2023 – MANCHESTER-BOSTON REGIONAL AIRPORT (“MHT”) will begin a multi-phase runway reconstruction project on April 1, 2023, that is scheduled to be completed by mid-September 2023. The project will include the complete rehabilitation of the primary runway, 17-35, and the partial rehabilitation of the crosswind runway, 6-24.

The scheduled work includes milling and paving the keel (i.e., the middle) section of Runway 6-24 and completely resurfacing Runway 17-35. In addition to asphalt replacement, the in-pavement centerline lights on Runway 17-35 will be replaced as well as the approach lighting system to both Runways 17-35 and 6-24 to enhance safety and operations.

The Airport has closely coordinated with its commercial and cargo airlines, along with other partners, to develop a plan that meets all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and airline-specific safety standards and also minimizes disruption to airline schedules by ensuring a runway is always open and accessible.

“These projects will provide much-needed enhancements to our runways, especially as our primary runway nears the end of its 20-year useful life,” said Airport Director Ted Kitchens, A.A.E. “However, we recognize that these projects may cause local businesses and neighbors to experience different air traffic patterns during different phases of the projects. We wanted to make sure the community was aware of what and why this was occurring.”

The $17.3 million project will be completed by Pike Industries based in Belmont, New Hampshire, and will be funded through a combination of FAA grants, the state of New Hampshire, and the Airport. The FAA will cover 90% of the cost, while the state and the Airport will cover 5% each.

Regular updates to the project will be provided on MHT social media channels. For more information about specific runway closures, please visit https://www.flymanchester.com/public-documents-and-plans/runway-construction-project-2023/.
