REAL ID Legislation Signed Into Law

On Tuesday, May 10, 2016 Governor Hassan signed into law House Bill 1616. The new law effectively makes NH driver's licenses compliant with the National REAL ID Act through October 2020, Making it an acceptable form of identification for TSA screening.

NH residents should also be aware that the new law will require them to affirmatively choose the federally compliant license the next time they renew their driver's license.

A few dates travelers should be aware of regarding REAL ID:

  • Starting January 2, 2017 NH will offer REAL ID-compliant licenses to residents who choose to have one, when renewing their driver's license.
  • Until January 2018, when traveling by air, residents in ANY state are still able to use a driver's license, or any other various forms of identification accepted by TSA.
  • Starting October 1, 2020, every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license, or other acceptable form of identification such as a Passport.
